30/10/2002 07:02 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A series of explosions have damaged a mosque in Soweto , Johannesburg , and also cut railway lines between the sprawling suburb and the city, police and Metrorail officials said on Wednesday morning.
SABC radio and television news reported that between seven and nine bombs had exploded and that two more were disarmed by police, including one at a service station along Old Potchefstroom Road .
They said at least one person had been killed by the blasts, but police were not immediately available to confirm this.
The sequence of events started with a reported blast near the New Canada railway station about midnight .
The SABC reported that one person may also have died in the New Canada blast.
Next, a blast rocked an informal settlement near Protea South, killing one person and wounding another.
Shortly afterwards an explosion ripped a hole in the northern wall of a mosque in Soweto 's Dlamini area.
Speaking from the scene, Soweto police spokesperson Superintendent Richard Luvhengo said about 01:30 that the explosion took place about five minutes to midnight .
Luvhengo said it was not clear who had planted the explosive devices.
Metrorail spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng said at least two blasts occurred along railway lines between Soweto and Johannesburg .
The first was inside a subway at Midway station and the second along a line between New Canada and Crown stations.
Mofokeng said the damage appeared to be extensive.
Repair crews were on site but were waiting for police to complete their preliminary investigations before starting repairs.
Mofokeng said train services along the Midway, Naledi and Oberholzer lines would be severely affected.
Service to Naledi, Langlaagte and Midway was suspended and trains from Oberholzer to Johannesburg were to be routed via Randfontein until further notice.
A shuttle service was being set up to link Lenz and Houthuizen.
Trains from Lenz would run via Vereeniging and another shuttle service would link Langlaagte, Faraday and Westgate stations.
More trains had also been scheduled along the Vereeniging-Meyerton route.
