It is estimated that over 200,000 tons of fertiliser per annum is distributed by road in the Free State. One fertiliser blender based at Danielsrus sent a small amount of fertiliser to the Eastern and Western Cape during 2005 – 2006 by rail. A major producer is located at Sasolburg and around 22 000 tons of fertiliser were loaded to rail for destinations in the Western, Eastern Cape and the North- West. Nearly half of the rail traffic was destined to Zambia and Zimbabwe.
