Mooketsi (J 5)

Name: Mooketsi

a settlement in the Limpopo Province, South Africa

Mooketsi is located along the R81 in the Limpopo Province.

BACKGROUND

The R81 was proclaimed in 2002 from the province. During the time when the province were the responsible authority, a court case developed between the farmers, the illegal occupants within the road reserve and the province. The matter was not resolved as yet when the proclamation was completed.

The complainant then had the court order imposed onto SANRAL. The funding was still to come from the Limpopo Province but SANRAL had to manage the process. The key element of this case was that the complainant was to provide a section of land where the people within the road reserve were to be relocated to. However, the land has not been provided by the complainant and the process is currently at the point of re-negotiation between the affected parties. The funding for the completion of the project needs to be secured from the Limpopo Province.

There are approximately 30 illegal occupants within the road reserve. The most serious problem that we are faced with is that these people are at great risk from a safety perspective due to the nature and position of their trading facilities.

SCOPE OF WORK

The project is straight forward in that the number of people that are to catered for can be accomodated within the proposed area of re-location and be able to trade safely and as effectively as they have been to date. The re-location is approximately 200m away from their current position which enables the same effective trading as expected.

The construction works are to include the trading stalls with lock-up facility for each of the traders. Ablution facilities have been incorporated into the design. The Limpopo Province have already constructed the parking areas.

The estimated costs for the project total to R3 million rands with a construction duration of 6 months.
