Nylstroom (H 6)

Name: Nylstroom

The name Modimolle means ''the spirits have eaten'. Before the town of Modimolle got its current name, it was named 'Nylstroom' by the early settlers, who mistook a nearby hill for the Pyramids thus believing the river to be the Nile.

Historic fact:

Modimolle is part of the Waterberg district of the Limpopo province, and is a thoroughfare for visitors on their way to the nearby mineral spas and game reserves. The scenery is abundant with green vegetation and wildlife.

Main attractions include the many water-sports and outdoor activities found in and around Modimolle. Choose from bathing in hot springs or fishing at the Donkerpoort Dam. For sports enthusiasts, golf, squash, tennis and bowling are available. For the thrill seeker, rock climbing and extreme sky diving are available, as well as 4x4 and quad trails.

Bordering Modimolle is the impressive Nylsvlei Bird and Nature Reserve, which is the largest and best conserved flooded plain in the country. The many game reserves in the area contain impressive wildlife including nyala, sable antelope, buffalo and leopard.

You can also embark on more relaxed activities, such as visiting the Old Locomotive, the original train used on the line between Nylstroom and Pretoria from 1889. The Modimolle Museum charts the town's history, and the Old Reformed Church is the oldest church north of South Africa's capital city of Pretoria.
