Name: Ngodwana
Ngodwana is the flagship of Sappi’s Kraft division in South Africa and is situated in the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga. Ngodwana Mill came on stream in 1966. It is one of the largest integrated paper and pulp mills of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is one of the most modern paper and pulp mills in the world. Sappi Kraft is a division of Sappi Forest Products, Africa’s leading forest products’ company which is, in turn, a division of Sappi Limited.
As an innovative, customer-focused organisation Sappi’s aim is to anticipate and exceed their customers’ expectations throughout the world. To this end, the company is constantly designing and developing new products and seeking new ways of improving its high standards of service.
Fibre is supplied mainly by Sappi Forests, the balance by private growers with whom the company has long-term contracts to ensure continuity of supply. The principal pine species are Pinus Patula, Pinus Elliottii and Pinus Taeda. The mill also produces bleached hardwood pulp from Eucalyptus Grandis, mainly for its own use.
The mill uses the kraft pulping process to produce bleached and unbleached pulp. A major proportion of pulp produced is consumed in the production of newsprint, kraft linerboard and white top linerboard. The balance is sold as market pulp. Of the mill’s total output, 70% is sold in the domestic market and the balance is exported to countries throughout the world. The mill has the capability of producing 410,000 tonnes of unbleached kraft pulp of which 200,000 tonnes are converted into bleached pulp. In addition, it produces 100,000 tonnes of mechanical pulp for its own consumption, 240,000 tons of kraft linerboard and white top linerboard and 140,000 tonnes of newsprint per annum.
