Five Poeple Killed In Train Attack

JOHANNESBURG Aug 27 Sapa

Five people died and two were injured as a gang of killers
rampaged through an East Rand train on Wednesday evening,
according to police.

Beginning at 6pm, the attackers stabbed and shot passengers
and hurled them out of the train windows, W/O Andy Pieke told
Sapa on Thursday.

Also shortly after 6pm, a sixth man was killed and two more
were injured by commuters, although it is not clear whether
this was sparked by the initial attack.

W/O Pieke reported three incidents between 6pm and 7.05pm, as
the gang apparently moved through the train.

At Katlehong's Pilot Station, four men were stabbed and thrown
out of the windows.

Three died and one is in hospital.

Between Elsburg and Wadeville stations, police found the body
of a man on the railway line. "He had presumably been thrown
out of a train."

Shortly after 7pm, police found the body of a man on the
railway line who had been attacked and then thrown off a
train.

"He had died as a result."

W/O Pieke quoted victims as saying the attackers were
Zulu-speaking.

At about the same time, in two more incidents of violence
during the same train journey, commuters themselves apparently
were involved in violence and two Zulus were attacked.

"At 6pm at Simpan Station in Germiston commuters attacked two
Zulu- speaking men by stabbing them with knives and throwing
them out of the train."

One was killed and one was admitted to a Germiston hospital.

"Between Wadeville and Katlehong...commuters in the train
attacked other commuters. One was shot in the neck and another
was stabbed with a knife. Both these injured men were thrown
out of the train," said W/O Pieke.
