Historical overview of Modimolle Local Municipality
Modimolle means ‘Place of Spirits’, referring to the prominent hill clearly visible from the N1 road. Many locals regard the hill as sacred. In addition, Modimolle Hill is said to have been the inspiration for the design of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria whose architect, Gerhard Moerdyk, also designed the Reformed Church in Modimolle town.

When a group of religious Voortrekkers reached a river flanked with reeds and flowing north, with a pyramid-shaped hill nearby, they deduced from the maps in their Bibles that they had traversed the whole of Africa and reached Egypt. They called the place Nylstroom, literally meaning Nile River.
