Atherstone is a small railway siding approximately 14km northwest of Grahamstown.

This community is situated on private property owned by Spoornet, with 25 people occupying the existing houses and/or facilities.

Existing infrastructure

This establishment was supplied with water during the operation of steam trains. This has now ceased and hence the water supply previously supplied by overhead tanks for the trains has been terminated.

Water resources

Groundwater is considered the only sustainable water source for this community.

For later use: Station Master’s Arms, situated off Inanda Road at the old Hillcrest Train Station, was established in July 2004. Extensive improvements to the building were done, which included extending the dining area, building a new kitchen and improving the patio area. With bric-a-brac from the railway era, and the 70 year-old steam train passing by, this pub provides a perfect dining experience, in an historic setting.
