Lebaleng (G 7)

Lebaleng

A major draw-back of the rail system is that the main station is situated afew kilometres south of the centre of the CBD. The rail infrastructure is oldand lacking in maintenance. Little new capital investment is being made inthe rail system due to a lack of funds and declining revenues, resultingfrom reduced demand and fare evasions. The exception to this is therecent re-development of the Denneboom modal transfer facility, theupgrading of the Mabopane Station Interchange and Kopanong Station onthe Mabopane – Pretoria railway line, serving the Klip-Kruisfontein area. Another station upgrade is planned at Eerste Fabrieke while theconstruction of a new station at Lebaleng (on the Mabopane - Pretorialine) is due in 2006/07.Of the 29 main railway stations, 13 have no road access and 15 have noparking facilities. Whereas demand has shifted from train and bus to taxi, increased demand at certain stations is being experienced where there aremodal transfers between bus, taxi and train, such as Mabopane, BelleOmbre, Eerste Fabriek and Denneboom.
