Glencairn (A 17)

Name: Glencairn

Glencairn Beach is a quaint little beach but is often overlooked as you head from Fish Hoek to Simon’s Town.

This mountainous village, with fantastic sea views, is actually a wetland conservation area with hiking trails, 2250 indigenous plant species, resident clawless otters, birds, mongooses and buck - and all this just two kilometres from a busy shopping centre.

Glencairn’s railway station includes a subway that leads right on to the beach and as such is popular with school children from in and around Cape Town. The long beach, with its gentle seas and accompanying tidal pool, is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and sunbathing.

Glencairn is also a good spot for whale watching in season and the locals will tell you tales of Great White sightings too. The wreck of the Glencairn barge lies about 450 metres off the Glencairn quarry and serves as a diving haunt for local divers who love it for the swim-throughs and the stunning reef that surrounds the wreck.

Glencairn’s homes are set right against the mountain, overlooking False Bay, and close to local shops and restaurants. Simon’s Town is literally around the corner and Boulders beach, which has one of the few land-based resident penguin colonies, is 10 minutes’ away.

The white, sandy beach is great for swimming and sunbathing without the crowds of people that flock to the more popular beaches. The water is usually a nice swimming temperature and the waves are typically quite small which makes it great for a leisurely swim.

Situated in close proximity to the picturesque Simon’s Town there are often sailing regattas in the bay. It is wonderful to relax on the beach, read a book and watch the colourful sailboats out in False Bay. After your day on the beach why not have lunch or even an ice cream in Simon’s Town.

Situated between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town. Where the M4 meets the M6.

Wind Direction: Sheltered when there is a Northerly wind.
