No 54: Mrs J A Semple (DP) to ask the Minister of Transport:
(1) Whether any damage was caused to the newly installed station facilities and signalling equipment along the Katlehong/Kwesine railway line in Gauteng during the recent national strike by security officers; if so, (a) what are the cost implications, (b) what time-frames are envisaged in respect of repair work and (c) how will this affect current repair work;

(2) whether any steps are being held taken to apprehend the perpetrators; if not, why not; if so, what steps?

REPLY:

(1) Yes. I am informed by the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) that extensive damage was caused to certain portions of the Katlehong - Kwesine railway line during the national strike by security officers during December 2000/January 2001.

(a) The estimated cost of the repairs needed for damage caused is as follows:

Katlehong Station

Building Works: 422 000
Access control, CCTV and Public Address systems: 159 000
581 000

Pilot Station

Building Works: 889 000
Access control, CCTV and Public Address systems: 289 000
1178 000

Kwesini Station

Building Works: 918 000
Access control, CCTV and Public Address systems: 635 000
1 553 000
Signalling and communication systems: 810 000
Estimated total costs: 4 122 000

(b) The repair work on the damage caused is planned for completion in May 2001.

(c) The reinstatement of train services between Katlehong and Kwesini was completed before damage was caused.

(2) Yes. The South African Police Service (SAPS), in conjunction with SARCC and Metrorail personnel, is currently investigating the various incidents. It is hoped that the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to book.
